Competition: Bob Oxlade Memorial Trophy - Stroke - Eclectic - Putting Comp and Monthly Medal.
Sponsor: Tyrepower Cheltenham
No of Players: 27 men + 2 Ladies + 1 Junior.
Conditions: No wind and fine conditions.
The Bob Oxlade Memorial Trophy day was sponsored by Tyrepower Cheltenham and it was good to see Sponsor Darryl Hall out for his first hit for the year. Also making his first appearance Chris Girling and Vince Hatch. Despite the threat of showers all week the golfing gods prevailed with fine conditions for the field of 30 staking their claim to win the first major trophy for the year. Danny Smith holding on to claim the prize with a nett 59.
Robert Hogg turned the first nine with 38 to let his intentions be known and despite his 44 on the back and was able to win A Grade from Gary Payne who finished second with 70 and Chris Girling third with 71.
B Grade saw Paul Shields start the day with NTP on the 1st and quickly birdied then chipped out on the second for a par turning the 8th 1 under with two birdies to finish the front nine with 36 and 10 putts. The back nine proving harder and despite another birdie chip in on the 14th and again on 15 for par struggled to stay focused with a double bogy on the 18th for 44 and 12 putts. Needless to say held on to the putting comp and also B Grade with 80 nett 62 and the May Monthly Medal. Michael Davies was out early playing with Danny finishing second with 65 with Andrew Baker who is continuing to improve third with 66.
C Grade was dominated by Danny Smith winning the Bob Oxlade and grade with a fine 59. Michael Dimasi was second and if his putting (33 putts) had been accurate would have given Danny a nudge over the course of the day. Michael finished with 64 edge out Peter Woods on third with 67. There was also an additional prize given out at the presentation following the NAGA to Tim Clifton claimed with open arms especially as he lost three balls on the back nine. The prize was for the most number of putts on the day which Michael Dimasi was awarded a putting guide to assist his next round.
Sadly Ian Smith pulled out mid round with an injury and we wish him a speedy recovery as the boys were sorry not to take the wager from him.
Saturday saw the latest father and son combo out on the course with Steve Kelly and son Jack playing together so Jack could submit his first card for handicap. Jack proving to be a future contender for many golfing trophies quickly dispatching Steve off the stick by four shots. Well done. It was also observed that Jack won the C Grade long Drive and speaking to Steve he said that he struck the ball well especially as he birdied 17th which was something a few of the regulars failed to do on the day.
Next week is the Hamley Bridge Challenge and the tee off is at 12 O'Clock ALL TWGC Members are asked to arrive at the club house early to assist in the pairing of the teams.
