Saturday 7 April 2024:
"Peter Lamont 26, Mark Gebauer 24, Scott Shorne 32 Pts. New Member 1st Card for Chris Cook.
Sadly I was advised of the news that Life Member Ian Smith was lifted up by angels after a long battle with cancer.
Always playing with his mates Ian Clark, Jeff Spackman all arriving about the same time starting with a small scotch to kick off the day.
A very steady golfer who had an ability to play some amazing shots when he needed to. He always spoke fondly of his youth in Scotland
and the courses he loved and no doubt played before moving to Australia. He was also an avid soccer fan and followed local clubs
as well as the clubs back in Scotland. Many of the Two Wells Members have played games with Ian over the period
he was a member of the club.
In recent years despite his health he still would come out and have a hit of the little white ball until he was sadly unable to play.
Ian always attended the Annual TWGC Open days competing and sharing many laughs with the guys he played with.
Ian was a very determined competitor who coming from Scotland took Golf as one of his passions which showed with him winning the
following Two Wells Annual trophies;
B Grade Champion 1995 and 2005.
Captains Trophy 2004
Club Trophy 2005
Veterans Trophy 2006
President’s Trophy 2006
Bob Oxlade Memorial Trophy 2006
Eclectic Trophy 2007
Applebee & Belcher Trophy 2011
Not to mention winning the prized weekly meat tray’s each season.
In 2012 the TWGC in recognition of his many years of support at the TWGC and Committee positions held Ian was awarded Ian
Life membership along with Brian (Bingo) Barns, Paul Shields of which he was proud and humbled by the nomination from the members.
He often reflected on it when I spoke to him on and off the course. Ian was one of the last of the old golfing fraternity with the
numbers of years he was a member and supported the Two Wells Golf Club.
I would bump into him shopping and we would chat until Iris dragged him away to help her with the shopping.
RIP Ian.
Paul Shields
Club Captain
Life Member.
